Making Your Best Nest: Finding the Perfect Sheets
In a recent post (“Now That the Baby Is Sleeping, 10 Ways Parents Can Get Better Sleep, Too”) I decided to focus more on parents getting the rest they need once they’ve successfully helped their children sleep better. So often parents will report to me that their baby or child is sleeping great, but that the adults are now the ones struggling to get to that deeply restorative sleep or stay asleep for more than an hour or two. Anxiety is also a common issue among new parents, causing feelings of inescapable panic and worry in the wee hours.
One of the pieces of advice that I constantly preach to parents is the importance of making a restful nest; in other words, your bedroom—and your bed, specifically—should be a comfortable, happy, soft place to land at the end of the day. Your room should be dark and cool. The use of a fan or a sound machine can cancel any noise from a rowdy neighborhood and help you get the rest you need.
Start at the Heart of Your Room: A comfortable bed
One area that I think is so often ignored is the bed. Many people I’ve talked to have mattresses they purchased in college, bedding they’ve had almost as long, and pillows that don’t resemble much more than lumpy mashed potatoes. Waking up in the morning, you should feel rested and rejuvenated. One of the primary culprits to feeling the opposite is that you aren’t investing in your sleep space—and this is one investment that undoubtedly has a very generous payout. It’s so worth it to get a well-made mattress, sheets, pillows, and quilts.
Following my own wisdom, I’ve decided that my own bed is due for a little bit of refreshing. Our mattress and pillows are in great shape, but I have been searching for some new sheets. If you’ve read my posts in the past, you know that I don’t mess around when it comes to finding products that are exactly right. I do extensive—even exhaustive—research, and don’t rest until I find something perfect. Every year for the past three years, I’ve purchased most of our linens from the linens shop of a nice hotel my husband and I have stayed at on several occasions. You might laugh, but this is actually the best way to test drive bedding! We stayed there, loved the sheets, and bought a set to take home. Of course, just as I was about to put in this year’s order, I received notice that the hotel is changing their vendor and the price of their linens has almost doubled. Needless to say, I’m in the market for some new sheets but I am not really in a position, with a three year old and a 9 month old, to spend any luxurious weekends at nice resorts to see if I want to buy their sheets.
Laugh all you want at this conundrum, but we’ve all spent a few nights in sheets that are rough, or sticky, or too slippery, or too hot. We’ve all woken up feeling like we slept between two pieces of sandpaper or plastic wrap. I’m a mom. I don’t have days to waste on terrible nights of sleep. It’s definitely worth it to turn to some experts who prize the same things I do: well made products that are responsibly and sustainably made by people who know the value of a great night of sleep.
In my quest I came upon Essentia, which is primarily a mattress company. They boast “Next Level Sleep”, which immediately caught my eye, because that is exactly what we need as parents: deep, rejuvenating, next level sleep. How does Essentia provide this kind of rest? Through products that guarantee comfort, unique blends of fabrics and materials that are organic and fair trade. This company is unique in its vision to not only create a marketplace for better sleep, but to better the world in the meantime. The creator, Jack Dell’Accio, became concerned with the products in mattresses after a family member was diagnosed with cancer. From there, he decided to start making chemical-free and low-impact products based in hevea milk (rubber tree sap) which is organic, sustainable, recyclable and procured by fair trade. I am a huge fan of companies that promote global and social responsibility. As a parent, I like that I am able to be passionate about my family’s health while at the same time bing passionate about leaving my children a habitable and peaceful planet.
The Essentia website shares the history of the company, the vision and passion of its employees to participate in volunteerism and charity, and the backstory of how each of their products comes to life, responsibly.
Of course, the ultimate question for me: do they make sheets? Yes!! In fact, they make everything from mattress bases to pillows to dog beds to customizable travel pillows. Unlike so many other mattress and bedding companies, they also make kids’ products like customizable crib mattresses and mattress protectors. Knowing that you are laying your baby down on an organic mattress that is also comfortable and safe helps parents rest even easier.
Essentia sheets come in all sizes, either Sable or Heather White (none of those nasty dyes), and are made from 100% organic cotton. “These 300 thread-count sheets outperform standard cotton sheets of a higher thread count. We’ve taken care to source only the finest quality certified organic cotton which when paired with the weave and finishing of the fabric results in the creamy softness that will only get better with time.”
Doesn’t that sound just about perfect? I think so.
The best part is that these sheets are affordable, as well as an investment in making your best nest, and in doing so a healthier, more restful sleep for parents in need of every bit of energy they can get.
If you are in the market for anything bed-related, be sure to stop by the Essentia website or one of their physical locations on your search. They are sure to have something to make your dreams a little sweeter! Check back in a few weeks for my review of my very own set of Essentia Organic Sheets.
Until then, Sweet Dreams!
